Two Bell County airports are receiving federal relief in response to the coronavirus economic shutdown.
“The funds are available for airport capital expenditures, airport operating expenses including payroll and utilities and airport debt payments,” Hilary Shine, Killeen's communications director, told the news agency. "This will be a discussion for council at a future meeting."
Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport was awarded $2.2 million in relief and Skylark Field was awarded $30,000, Shine said.
The Federal Aviation Administration is giving over $811.5 million to 210 airports across Texas, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao said. Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport and Skylark Field are among the airports receiving funding, according to the Killeen Daily Herald.
According to the news agency, the grants are part of President Donald Trump Administration's $2 trillion CARES Act, which supplies financial relief to businesses and organization affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of April 20, Texas reported 19,458 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 495 deaths. Bell County has 126 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
